There’s lots to explore in the local area.

Camp Plas is ideally situated to explore the best of what this stunning area has to offer. Here are some of our top tips…

  • An aerial view of a tall, cylindrical stone tower with a green, pointed, conical roof, situated in a body of water next to a forested shoreline and a winding road.

    Lake Vyrnwy.

Just on the edge of The Snowdonia National Park, Lake Vyrnwy is set amidst the remote and beautiful Berwyn Mountains. With spectacular waterfalls, and unspoilt open countryside, a visit to Lake Vyrnwy is a wonderful day out for all the family. There is also boat and canoe hire on the lake.

  • A large, red-brick castle on a hill surrounded by lush green trees and well-maintained gardens with shrubs, bushes, and decorative statues.

    Powis Castle.

Powis Castle, built around 1200 as a medieval fortress, sits high on a rock above its world-famous garden. Laid out under the influence of Italian and French styles, the garden is overhung with clipped yews and shelters rare and tender plants. It retains original lead statues and features an orangery on the terraces. Our guests have told us that the gardens are some of the best they have ever seen - so it's well worth a visit whilst you're here.

  • Person pouring beer from tap into a glass at a bar.

    Local Pubs.

Our nearest pub is 13 minutes drive away in Llanfair or you have a large choice of restaurants and pubs in Welshpool. Throughout the year we also host social events onsite such as bonfire parties and pizza evenings.

  • A person walking on a rocky mountain trail with mist-covered mountains in the background.

    For Walkers.

There are a multitude of walks in our local area ranging from a mild stroll to something more extreme. We’re also ideal situated for the Glyndŵr's Way National Trail. Named after Owain Glyndwr, the 15th century warrior/statesman who attempted to establish an independent Welsh nation, the route passes many sites connected with his rebellion.

  • Barn owl flying with outstretched wings in front of a green background.

    For Birdwatching.

We're lucky here at Camp Plas to have an amazing wealth of birds making it a bird watcher and naturalist's dream. You'll find Dippers under the bridge and Grey Wagtails and Goosanders on the river. Pied and Spotted Flycatchers, Wood Warblers and Redstarts sing in the trees. We also have 4 species of owl to look out for with Barn Owls spotted in one of our barns on our night cam. There is the Dyfi Osprey Project in Machynlleth.

  • A vintage steam train with green and brown cars traveling through a scenic countryside with green grass and trees.

    Llanfair Steam Train.

Close by there is Llanfair Steam Train which opened in 1903 to connect the town of Welshpool and nearby Llanfair Caereinion. They host events such as the Fish & Chips Evening Train and Welsh Tea on the Train.

Check out their website for more details.

  • Person riding a horse along a misty forest trail during autumn, with fallen leaves on the ground and trees with orange leaves.

    Horse Riding.
